Potrivit biologului marin Muharrem Balci de la Universitatea din Istanbul, supracreşterea algelor e favorizată de temperaturile mari şi poluarea apelor, care s-a accentuat în ultimii 40 de ani. După ceva vreme, cuvertura se prăbuşeşte şi ajunge la fund unde acoperă subsolul marin şi ecosistemul de acolo.
